The Department of Human Development and Family Studies seeks to enhance the quality of life for individuals across the lifespan within their diverse and changing relationships, families, social networks, and communities in varying contexts through
The Department prepares students to understand the dynamics of healthy and strong families and to work in a wide range of human service professions, especially those servicing children, youth, and families. The major has a strong applied focus. In addition, the department teaches courses designed to teach doctrines and skills to help maintain and strengthen the home as the most effective place of instruction, and provide a well-balanced education for teaching the importance of home and family.

The Child and Family Studies Concentration
offers course work in:
- child development
- family relationships
- parenting
- programs for young children
- development and care of children with developmental
disabilities
- adult development and needs of elderly persons.
Students participate in observations of
young children and apply their knowledge and skills with young children in the
UTM Children's Center. This course is an excellent undergraduate foundation for
master's degree programs in counseling, human development, psychology, social
work, child development and family relationships.
UW-Stout's Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) is dedicated to the study of human development and family life in which the individual, family, and community are viewed as interrelated. It is an interdisciplinary field that draws from other social sciences but has established distinct assumptions, approaches to studying families, and worldview. A multidisciplinary approach provides students with both a broad perspective and specialized knowledge.
