Focus
The Program (undergraduate through
doctoral-level) focuses on understanding the complex influences, relationships,
and ecologies of development across the lifespan. The program prepares students
to promote the optimal well-being of families and individuals, recognizing that
characteristics and needs of families change across the lifespan and within
multiple and diverse contexts. The program provides an option for professionals
to become licensed to teach Pre-K to Grade 3 in New Mexico, as well as an
option to become nationally-certified family life educators.
Mission Statement
The Department of Human Development and
Family Studies focuses on applied research, teaching, and service. From an
ecological perspective, we prepare scholars and professionals in their
understanding and appreciation of the complexity and diversity of individuals
and their relationships. The educational process encourages critical thinking
and the application of knowledge to improve the quality of life for individuals
and families across the life span.
Mission:
Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)
combines coursework, outreach, and the latest research to examine lifespan
development and to strengthen the quality of everyday life and human
well-being. While earning a Bachelor of Science degree, students learn about
human development in the classroom as well as through service-learning,
volunteer, and internship opportunities. Students are exposed to knowledgable
researchers who are passionate about preparing them for meaningful careers
within a field that is growing as fast as the world’s population.
Family Studies (formerly Child Development) emphasizes cross-cultural lifespan development and the social and economic roles of diverse individuals, families and communities. The department explores the relevance of culture as it pertains to health, psychology, sociology, parent education, nutrition, early childhood care, education, violence, family development, community resources, curriculum, child-rearing, and language acquisition.
